Фортуна
Фортуна — сила случая и обстоятельств, которую нельзя отменить, но можно обуздать. Макиавелли отвергает и фатализм («всё решает судьба, трудиться незачем»), и наивную веру во всевластие человека: фортуна распоряжается примерно половиной наших дел, вторую оставляет нам. Метафора — разлившаяся река: пока вёдро, строй плотины и каналы. Правитель, целиком положившийся на фортуну, гибнет, когда она меняется; спасает virtu — заранее возведённые барьеры и умение менять образ действий «со временем».
